Alder Flycatcher (6) (Empidonax alnorum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1078) (Comments - 2563)
Canada (Ontario) Long Sault - Also identified by call. This bird was 50 yards from the Willow but true to its name the Willow was in a nice stand of willows along a creek. But even that is not a reliable way to confirm what you are looking at.

Willow Flycatcher (12) (Empidonax traillii) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1078) (Comments - 2563)
Canada (Ontario) Long Sault - Identified by call. Now it is not safe to 'make a call' on these birds because they are too close to the Alder in plumage and most are no longer calling.

Alder Flycatcher (6) (Empidonax alnorum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1078) (Comments - 2563)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - Identified by call, after 15 minutes of waiting. Habitat is not a clear indicator of what the species is so you really need them to call to be sure.

Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - I returned to the site I had a bird recently and wanted to capture it on a sunny day. After a while it landed on a nearby perch and sang for me.

Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - Identified by call. I should probably call this one a tamarack flycatcher :)

Olive-sided Flycatcher (4) (Contopus cooperi)
Near-threatened
User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1078) (Comments - 2563)
United States (New York) Brasher - this was a surprise bird for us today. It remained atop a dead tree flycatching for over 20 minutes, lifting off briefly then returning usually to the same branch. It called periodically. I love the call 'quick three beers' :) Look it up if you have never heard it. At one point a Phoebe came along and flew at it but it warded it off. Later likely an Alder flew at it and it similarly rebuffed the attack.

Canada (Ontario) Cooper Marsh – Lancaster Very difficult to safely separate from its cousin the Alder Flycatcher except by call. This bird was calling.
