American Wigeon (24) (Anas americana) User: Brian  (See all photos - 890) (Comments - 1778)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - the bird is standing on ice. There is a small opening in a pond with a pile of Mallards and a pair of wigeon. Normally you can't get close to most ducks other than Mallards but when conditions force them into a tight area they may lose their inhibition.

Germany A Mallard resting on the ice in a very cold winter day in Northern Germany. Ducks mate very early in the spring and that's why they put on their breeding plumage in the winter already. Come the summer, males will look as drab as females!

Pacific Black Duck (2) (Anas superciliosa) User: ajosborne  (See all photos - 91) (Comments - 5)
Australia (Victoria) This little black duck looks like it might be a hybrid between a Northern Mallard and a Pacific Black Duck. The Northern Mallard is only found in southern parts of Australia as it was introduced here from the Northern Hemisphere and prefers cooler climates.

Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - This female makes a perfect landing on an icy pond. The bird was so close that I almost didn't get it all in the picture. This image is uncropped.
