The Albatross is my favourite bird. You can find 15 of the 22 species of Albatross in south African waters although a few have just been recorded as vagrants. We have never had the North Pacific birds- Waved,Black-footed, and Short-tailed but there is one record of Laysan's. We are missing some of the New Zealand birds as well. Gibson's, White-capped, and Antipodean. There is one doubtful record of Amsterdam- the one albatross I still need to see
This shot is of an Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross Split by IOC several years ago

We put fish oil out for these birds and were rewarded with both Black-footed and Short-tailed and lots of Streaked Shearwaters

Short-tailed Albatross breed on a small piece of rock called Torishima off the coast of Japan, so we were expecting to see the birds but nothing prepared us for this Albatross experience like no other

I had seen my first Short-tailed Albatross 5 weeks previously on the ferry trip down to Hachijo-jima
in the Izu islands, but the birds were a long way off and the photos poor- Boy was that going to change now!
