Great Grey Owl (48) (Strix nebulosa) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1227) (Comments - 3204)
Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - I don't usually post multiple shots of the same species but this photo shows an interesting aspect of GGOW biology. Note the slender branch the bird is perched on and that it is barely bending. The owl weighs only about 1.1 kg which does not seem to match its very large size. This is our largest owl but the bird is a big ball of feathers. By comparison, a Snowy weighs about 2 kg. The photo was taken on a tripod after sunset on a cloudy day with little light left. Very slow shutter speed.

Snowy Owl (208) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1227) (Comments - 3204)
Canada (Ontario) St. Rose - We have half a dozen birds about 40 minutes from me which is a smaller number than the last few years but appreciated nevertheless. This was a 'pole bird' that didn't mind our presence. As a rule I don't take many pole shots but the light was great and it was very cooperative. I shot from the window and moved on after a minute. Update: Some owl stats. Christmas count data indicated that the flight this year was larger than I expected. Nearly 190 birds were counted in Ontario with about 40% in the east. Some stayed and others moved into the U.S. until spring.

Snowy Owl (208) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1227) (Comments - 3204)
Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island. We couldn't pass up this beauty. The number of male Snowies compared to females in the winter is low so any time a male is present it is cause for rejoicing. This bird was incredibly tolerant. We shot from the car across the road and the bird didn't pay us much attention. We could only shoot in vertical format. It was too close :) The dull gray sky offered a perfect contrast for our subject.

Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island. I'm trying to keep my Snowy shots focused on something different. In this case it is interesting to see it resting on a cobble beach an hour after sunrise.

Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island. It's that time again. A small number of Snowies have been on the island in the last week (probably about a dozen) with hopefully more to come.

Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - Who knew I was going to be bringing you another Snowy so soon. This one has been summering in Ottawa on a residential construction site. Boy does it need a bath. Or perhaps that's camouflage "No one will recognize me now."

Marsh Wren (35) (Cistothorus palustris) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1227) (Comments - 3204)
Canada (Ontario) Ingleside - I try not to duplicate my subjects too often (Snowy Owls excepted) :) but this Marsh Wren was very cooperative this morning. I love the way they can readily grab on to two cattails for support. That's a Jean-Claude Van Damme move.

Snowy Owl (208) (Nyctea scandiaca) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1227) (Comments - 3204)
Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island. Following recent warming some of the Snowy Owls have finally decided it's time to head north. This beautiful individual offered me what might be a final shot for the season.

Canada (Ontario) Millhaven - The pupils on this bird are awesome. Taken from the car just before sunrise on a cloudy morning so fairly dark. Low shutter speed. I'm lucky it worked at all.

Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island. I thought I was done with Snowies for the year but apparently not. I had numerous cooperative birds that day, which is very unusual in itself.
