Canada (Québec) Trois Rivieres - This bird has been around most of the season and was my 5th one this winter. These owls will be heading north in the next few weeks but it has been an enjoyable winter with them.

Canada (Ontario) Ottawa - This Pileated is not pleased that the owl is still around. It let it know several times. Maybe it had plans to take down the treetop :)

Canada (Ontario) I checked out this bird as a way to start off the New Year. Sometimes the owl hovers over its target before plunging.

Canada (Ontario) Being attacked by a Northern Shrike. The owl is competition, not its next meal. I had the camera on a tripod and was watching the shrike, waiting to see if it would attack. I started shooting a couple of seconds before it reached the owl, otherwise a shot like this would be very difficult to get.

It was a two owl day, my first for this species. The birds were a couple of hours apart. A few Northern Hawk Owls have come south this winter. Next year we should have Great Grays if the boreal rodent cycle works in our favour. Hawk Owls are well known for being cooperative subjects. There was no need to push the birds for photos. We just waited and they often came close to us.

Canada (Ontario) This particular bird was not supposed to be a good subject because it spends most of its time hunting from power lines. However, for two minutes it flew across the road and perched at eye level at the edge of a forest. Worked for me. This photo is uncropped. The bird was so close I had to back up to fit it in the frame. That's a nice problem to have.

Canada (Québec) Sherbrooke - We spent the day with the bird and in this shot it had retrieved a cached vole from an 8 ft. high stump. We didn't know it was there. We were just shooting the bird when it retrieved it from below. Imagine the surprise.

Canada (British Columbia) Westham Island, Delta BC. This owl has been visiting the South Coast since Dec 15 and has been the subject of two Vancouver Sun articles. it was easy to find as there about 30 people parked on the side of the road photographing it.
