Alder Flycatcher (6) (Empidonax alnorum) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1077) (Comments - 2563)
Canada (Ontario) Long Sault - Also identified by call. This bird was 50 yards from the Willow but true to its name the Willow was in a nice stand of willows along a creek. But even that is not a reliable way to confirm what you are looking at.

Willow Flycatcher (12) (Empidonax traillii) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1077) (Comments - 2563)
Canada (Ontario) Long Sault - Identified by call. Now it is not safe to 'make a call' on these birds because they are too close to the Alder in plumage and most are no longer calling.

Western Wood Pewee (6) (Contopus sordidulus) User: lou_dav  (See all photos - 1086) (Comments - 733)
Canada (British Columbia) Maplewood Conservation Area, North Vancouver BC At first I thought this was a Willow Flycatcher, but sound and behaviour indicated Pewee. It was actively hawking insects from a low perch.

Willow Flycatcher (12) (Empidonax traillii) User: Rick Poulin  (See all photos - 58) (Comments - 118)
Canada (Ontario) I have found this species very wary and hard to approach. I finally managed to get a few images of this Willow Flycatcher (yes it spoke to me) west of Ottawa.

Canada (Ontario) Cooper Marsh – Lancaster Very difficult to safely separate from its cousin the Alder Flycatcher except by call. This bird was calling.

Canada (British Columbia) Grant Narrows Regional Park, Maple Ridge BC Not the greatest shot, but not many of these on the site. Identified positively by fitz-bew call it was making as I shot this.
