Great story on this one. This bird was 15 feet from me in my car sunning itself along a paved road, about two feet from the edge. It wanted to be on the exposed grassy part on the coldest morning in years. To complete the picture, there was a snow bank filling the ditch and shoulder. When I drove past, out of the corner of my eye I thought it was a lump of dirty snow that had fallen off a car but I jokingly thought "That almost looked like a Short-eared." I went a bit ahead then circled and returned far enough to check it with binoculars. I gasped. I stayed with it for 15 minutes watching it sleep, preen and check sounds. Several cars passed by, two feet from it. The bird eventually flew across the road and went off to hunt at 10:30 in the morning. We had seen it flying the day before at noon further down the road. What luck.
