Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) User: Brian  (See all photos - 1013)
Canada (Ontario) Kingston - Wolfe Island; I waited a long time for this species. It does not show clearly but the cere on the bill is yellowish, rather than pale blue seen on young birds. However, it isn't very extensive so others are thinking this bird is a sub-adult but not a young bird.

I didn’t know they were found in that area. Given how many times I frequented Mirabel without success, I can understand the perseverance needed to get a shot like this. Congratulations

Gyrfalcons can turn up anywhere in Ontario from south to north but in the south they are not found every year and are rare. This bird has hung around for much of the winter but being in the right place at the right time is challenging. I have made numerous trips there this winter. I missed a number of other birds in other locations in recent years.
