Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) User: Brian Morin  (See all photos - 1099)
Canada (Ontario) Presqu'ile Provincial Park - I made the lengthy trip hoping to find some of these interesting birds. I had some luck in the afternoon. This is peak time for the Whimbrel flight. Presqu'ile is on the periphery of their migration. Toronto is where most of the flight passes.

And there were 6 more outside the frame. I worked with this flock for 2 1/2 hours which is far longer tha one would expect. Whimbrels usually stop only a short time then continue on their way to the Arctic so I got very lucky. They were being held back by extremely strong winds from the northwest. It worked for me
