Excellent photo. I wonder why they fly north, only to have to turn around and fly south in a short time?

Birds in the heron family have wanderlust. They breed earlier in the south than species up here and after it is over they may move around. There are also non breeding birds that hit the road. It works for birders.

This was a fun exercise. I had failed twice to locate the bird outside Presqu'ile (once last year and twice this spring) so when I heard about this one an hour closer to me I went for it. I had it as soon as I pulled over on the highway. It was at a distance so I asked the farmer's permission and was allowed into his yard, close enough for decent shots. I just had to shoot around a horse that wanted to be in the shot (it kept trying to breath on the lens). I shot again inside his barn but another horse got in my way there as well so I got down on my knees and shot under its neck. The chickens walking on the beam over my head must have wondered what was going on.
