This individual has become a local star. Sometimes very close. I was in the water with it when a Merlin swooped over the beach. The shorebirds scattered, mostly running. This bird headed straight towards me and hunkered down in a very small island of sticks and vegetation, about 15 feet away. The Merlin was in pursuit of a Pectoral which after a long aerial dogfight managed to elude it. The dowitcher remained and didn't care about me standing nearby with my tripod. I'm pretty sure it saw me as its bodyguard.

The stories from birding are as good as the photos sometimes, and definitely in this situation!

That's part of the lure of this hobby.
