There were very few woodpeckers seen on this Kenya trip. This species was seen at Lake Naivasha, as per the map indicator.

The Brown-eared Woodpecker has almost no range in Kenya. Luckily we found one at the Kakamega Rainforest in western Kenya near Kisumu.

The only place in Kenya that appears to have the habitat to support this woodpecker is Kakamega Rainforest. Unfortunately the photo conditions in the forest were tricky and this species was seen for just a few seconds.

This was probably the rarest bird we saw on the trip. Status is uncertain due to pressure on its rainforest habitat; in Kenya it is restricted to one forest block at Kakamega.
