Probably the most common sandgrouse in Botswana. Sandgrouse visit waterholes and rivers in the early morning and have special spongy feathers that retain water, that they will then deliver to the chicks that stayed in the more arid habitat.

Fish eagles patrol the humid zones of Africa and are very common. There must still be enough fish in those waters!

Not a great picture but this is an iconic sandgrouse, mostly sought after in the Kalahari. We saw many of them there, but some at the Okavango delta, too!

We observed very large numbers of this species in the Okavango delta, despite it being reported as uncommon. The shape of the bill is optimized for catching fish.
