This very endangered species only lives in a very restricted range of 100 kms in Northern Peru.It is estimated that there are only 100 individuals in existance. We visited Huembo reserve with Santos Mantenegro, the caretaker there. This is my favorite species of hummingbird as you only get very fleeting glances of him darting out for protection in the shrubs. We travelled to Northern Peru in 2007 to see this species and again this year.it is hoped that it will not become extinct.

Blue-hooded Euphonia.
This tiny bird wears his name well, with his sky-blue hood. I first thought I had Hummingbirds when I pointed my camera upwards. They are in the same size range. We found the flock in a little park (originally a banana plantation) across the street from the hotel, in Monteverde.
