Bitterns are quite common in Switzerland during the winter, but are usually quite hard to see. Except for this one, that moved out of the reedbeds following extensive freezing and looked for food in a canal with open water. When surprised, it adopted its typical posture, forgetting that it was actually not camouflaged at all!

I would appreciate any insight into identifying this bird - it was seen at a mountain pass in western Switzerland. Habitat was tundra and stunted shrubs. Thanks!
