A member of the tiny Swiss population of this species, which has dramatically declined in the last 50 years and almost disappeared from the country. Luckily it is now doing a little better!

What appears to be a Black Redstart. This bird landed on the roof of Zurich Airport and may have been in migration as it seemed out of placed and tired. Fortunately had my camera handy!

Bluethroats are stunning birds but they are not always easy to see. They usually inhabit marshes and I was very lucky to see this one on a rocky riverbed. It was on migration. Males have an amazing blue throat that they mostly lose in the winter!

Wallcreepers are the most sought-after birds in the Alps. Their colors are very special and their butterfly-like flight is also very particular. They are not uncommon and are found also attending man-made structures such as dams! They spend the summer high up in the mountains but in the winter they can be found at much lower altitudes.

Bohemian Waxwings get to Southern Europe only in invasion years. In my region in Switzerland they are usually found on persimmon trees, which carry their fruit in the winter (in this photo, though, they are on a different tree since it was later in the season, no more persimmons on the trees).

Dippers are very special birds because they are the only ones that are able to walk at the bottom of streams! To achieve that they have heavier bones that allow them to stay underwater!

These birds are not very easy to see. They have a cryptic plumage and they only get flushed from a few steps away. This one stayed in the same position for at least 25 minutes, and did not move even when a dog approached it up to a couple meters!

This species is very similar to the American Snowy Egret and differs only in the color of the bare parts (bill and legs), especially when breeding.

One more image of the glorious day when I found 5 Dotterels at about 2700 m asl in Switzerland!

Dotterels breed in the tundra, and during their southward migration towards Northern Africa they usually stop in habitats that remind them of their breeding place. Therefore they are mostly found above the treeline in the Alps. In this particular region, no Dotterels had been seen for over 20 years, but I was lucky enough to "rediscover" them in a group of 5 adults!
