This photo was taken in very poor light conditions, but since the species is not yet in the database I thought I'd just add it. Red-footed Falcons are migrating through Switzerland in May, and they are particularly common in Maybug(beetles that look quite similar to Junebugs but that occur in May)-years.

On rainy days in the spring, many migrants stop just south of the Alps, to avoid crossing the mountains in bad weather. That is when the fields of southern Switzerland are alive with a lot of different birds, including shorebirds such as this Wood Sandpiper.

Quite a distant shot but it shows a beautiful Eared Grebe in breeding plumage. You can see why in Europe it is called Black-necked Grebe, too!

This species is not very common in the south of Switzerland but it may occasionally be seen. This is probably a young female, since males have white eyes and adult females have lighter colored eyes. It joined a flock of Tufted Ducks (the one on the left).

This species has been introduced to North America but originates from Eastern Europe. Here also the leucistic version of it!

This skulker is not very easy to observe but with some patience it can happen! This was taken from a hide. Their calls sound like a screaming pig!

Great Egrets are a quite recent addition to the Western European fauna. The species is expanding from the East, and the first breeding records for Switzerland just occurred a couple years ago. It is still more common in the winter though.
