St. Rose - back to check on our regional Snowies on a snowy day. For a change this bird was perched at eye level on a sign rather than atop a power pole.

St. Rose - there was just enough sunlight to highlight the bird's beautiful eyes. As usual, the bird was on a pole, annoyingly oblivious to me in my van. She did occasionally look, just long enough to get the shots I was after. She didn't care about small vehicles but she took off when a noisy larger truck passed by.

Kingston - I came across yet another gorgeous bird today. The sombre sky provided nice even tones for the owl. WIth no snow they show up better than during the depths of winter. I love the talons.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - I thought I'd give you a rare glimpse into the world of the Snowy Owl. If you look closely you'll see that this bird is in the process of coughing up a pellet which consists of undigested fur, bones and in this specific case, a few small feathers (duck may have been on the menu). It took it about a minute before the pellet was expelled. This shot was about 5 seconds before it was out. The gray mass is about 2" long and nearly an inch wide. By examining owl pellets you can gauge what its recent meals have been.

Wolfe Island (Kingston) - Notice the difference in appearance with the other bird I posted. I love the stern look. This bird was perched on a large bale close to the road offering a close but brief photo op.

Presqu'ile Provincial Park - The face of this bird is unusual. It is almost clown-like. It coughed up a large pellet shortly after this photo was taken. Duck was on the menu.

St. Rose - one of the first I have photographed for the season although birds have been in the east for weeks. A number of new birds have arrived since the weekend.

Kingston - There were still 13 birds on Wolfe Island with some being recent migrants from the south. In a few weeks many will move on.
