Birding since the late 1980s...mid 40s birder. Being out in nature and hearing the morning chorus, seeing how birds interact with their surroundings and go about their lives provides me a greater understanding of the natural environment we live in. With bird photography, every photo is different, which makes seeing the same and different species exciting.

In recognition of the 100th anniversary of the extinction of the Passenger Pigeon, here is a photo of the specimen mounted at the Visitor's Centre at Point Pelee. The last bird died in Cincinnati in 1914.

Not a whole lot of photos of this species on Birdviewing. Not sure why. Here is a tired male foraging on the ground suring migration on a wet morning at Long Point, Ontario.

Note the lack of a rusty tail (Hermit Thrush) and the lack of buff or beige on the side of the head (Swainson's Thrush). Seen at Long Point, Ontario during spring migration. Thanks to Sue for the ID on this bird.

Rick's recent photo reminded me that I had another to upload from last month at Godmanchester, Quebec. This call is very distinctive. I've uploaded a recording made that morning using my iphone; the recording is in the forum section at http://www.birdviewing.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6574#post6574

nest
My 400th species actually turns out to be a nest photo of the Indigo Bunting. Seen at Otis Lake Bird Sanctuary, Barry County, Michigan. Taking nest photos requires very careful precautions: it's important not to disturb the surroundings which could lead the bird to abandon the nest. Also, I spent less than 10 seconds taking this photo and then immediately left the area to allow the bird to return. These particular birds were very lucky not to have the nest touched by a passing lawn tractor, which cut the grass on the side of the road and nearly exposed the nest.
