The Virginias are always a challenge, they are either hidden in cover or moving too fast. Nevertheless, I manage a few decent shots every year.

This particular day the Towhee was relatively low in the branches allowing for some better photo angles.

The Great Blue was attacked or shooed away by a Redshouldered Blackbird. He was quite startled by the first hit to his head. Note the attacker in the upper left. The heron has quite the beautiful rear plume. Its not always that visible.

The male was easy to ID, with his discreet but handsome plummage.

This female was with a male, otherwise ID would be tougher. A couple of pairs appear to be resident in this backwaters of the Lachine rapids.

Pipeline Rd, Gamboa, Panama

We did our birders pilgrimage down Pipeline Road. Half way through we came across an army ant colony on the move and their path was to the edge of our road. A number of birds were in attendance. The Bicoloured Antbirds were the most numerous. At the time I was not the owner of a Betterbeamer, so photography was difficult in the understory gloom.

Continuing from previous photo, despite never having seen one before, it was immediately obvious what was in front of me.

I was trying to improve my position to shot a Caracara on a roof, when something caught my eye in front of me. Less than 15 feet away was this meadowlark in the grass. The irony is that I have never seen one in Canada.
