Birding since the late 1980s...mid 40s birder. Being out in nature and hearing the morning chorus, seeing how birds interact with their surroundings and go about their lives provides me a greater understanding of the natural environment we live in. With bird photography, every photo is different, which makes seeing the same and different species exciting.

I stumbled upon a heronry just west of Frankfurt on the Main River. Then a Buzzard flew in and 15 herons when up together and alighted on the banks below.

winter plummage
There was a slight run off the Main into an narrow waterway, and this Cormorant popped up in amongst ducks and coots. This is probably as close as I've been to a Cormorant, but he was having success and caught a fish in this quickly moving current. Seen west of Frankfurt.

These birds are very common around Frankfurt, but I just realized there isn't a photo on Birdviewing yet!

Sorry for the poor quality, but this was as close as I could get without wanting to scare it off. The first time I've been able to photograph him.

Though common, the Emerald sheen of the Mallard is one of the striking sights in the bird world.

This species must have one of the shortest bills of any bird.

I'm a little puzzled by this id. According to the Collins guide, this is a Great Cormorant. However the plumage seems to be missing white at the base of the bill. Frankfurt, Germany.
