  1. If the area is open, they look for some sort of cover like a lump of dirt, a rock, a small area of weeds or stubble if in a cut cornfield. This rock was fairly large but the dirt might only be about its own size.

  2. Since this was posted there have been a few additional sightings in other areas. One had 10 birds one day, 8 the next and only 4 a few days later. The rest had moved on. This is the winter to check traditional areas and that includes along the main rivers where ducks are on the menu. When this bird throws on the afterburners, it can out fly a merganser for a short distance, much like the performance of a cheetah in a sprint.
