female, adult, winter plummage
This is the female Siberian Rubythroat, a winter visitor in Taiwan. Instead of flaming ruby colored throat in the male, the feather of this female rubythroat is generally similar and a little less than the male counterpart. This female is paired with the male in Yehliu area, so this is easy to identify. However, in the field, this female bird will be difficult to be identified. Similar to the male, this bird is very happy to hop around lots.

This widely distributed pacific reef heron or pacific reef egret, is mostly in the coast area. There are 2 forms, one is in dark colour and the other is white. I have seen only the dark form, black or blue-black. This one had also a white patch near the neck. Iris is usually yellow but this one is dark brown. Legs were short but much thicker than most heron/egret.

This same Eurasian Blackbird also found in China and many part of Asia. I found this bird on the grass in the Hongchou's wetland conservation area. It must be another subspecies. Unlike the European one with bright color, this one look dull. Without hearing it sound (it is dead winter on March in Asia this year!), I can not say about its voice. The same species, perhaps 10K kms apart, illustrate this well adapted species.

Formosan blue magpie or Taiwan blue magpie. This pretty bird is faily large with very long and nice tail feathers. It might be elected as Taiwan national bird. This crow family species live in a tight family structure, so the sighting is always at least four or more birds. Very aggresive, the flight looks more like floating than hard beating of the wings.
