Cornwall - note the profile of this bird. It holds its tail and wings up unlike other subspecies of Lessers but also unlike most gulls. This is the intermedius subspecies which is considered rare in North America but I had several birds. I think we get a small number of these birds each fall. It also has a darker back than the more frequently seen Lessers. UPDATE: I have been corresponding with three gull experts and while interesting the bird doesn't quite measure up as far as that subspecies goes. Not black enough for one thing. The bottom line, however, it is still a Lesser Black-backed :)

Two young Lesser Black-backed Gulls. They were color-banded for a research project on this species. They found that these birds migrate all the way to at least the coast of Mauritania, in West Africa!

Please feel fee to correct me on the ID, as always. I was out of my element down in Florida, and dealing with a 3rd winter Lesser-Black-backed Gull which is not a bird I've seen very often.
