winter plummage
Cornwall - note the profile of this bird. It holds its tail and wings up unlike other subspecies of Lessers but also unlike most gulls. This is the intermedius subspecies which is considered rare in North America but I had several birds. I think we get a small number of these birds each fall. It also has a darker back than the more frequently seen Lessers. UPDATE: I have been corresponding with three gull experts and while interesting the bird doesn't quite measure up as far as that subspecies goes. Not black enough for one thing. The bottom line, however, it is still a Lesser Black-backed :)

Russell - a regionally rare species that turns up in small numbers every year. Adults are easier to identify than immatures. Herring Gull size, dark gray not black back, smaller bill than Great Black-backed and yellow rather than flesh-coloured legs.
