Ottawa - Last month I posted a picture of a Tree Sparrow but I couldn't confirm until now that the number of winter visitors this year are way down from what we can expect. With Christmas bird counts almost complete for another year, results are showing low to record low numbers across Ontario. I'm not sure why that is. It doesn't suggest that there is anything disastrous happening with the species but it is a curiosity. We'll see this time next year if the numbers return to normal.

Toronto - Greater Scaup above, Lesser Scaup below. Note the rounded head of the Greater and the peak on the back of the head of the Lesser. In this photo the sheen appears to be greenish on both birds but often the head of the Lesser appears purple.

Ahmad Shah: Terrific capture.
Brian Morin: This was both a surprise and a shocker. I was trying to get some shots of a more distant Ring-necked Duck when I spotted this Bufflehead diving very close to shore and only about 5-7 metres from the car. The problem was that weed stalks were in the way, partially obscuring the shot so I waited until the bird would dive them backed up just enough to give me a chance. I was able to get it between the weeds with enough room to perform a decent crop. I also had it in perfect light and distance. As you know, without sun, this bird's head is black.

Chris: Amazing to see and superb capture too! It’s interesting this species isn’t expanding more rapidly to the north, given its a hardy bird.
BrianMorin: It has been a slow expansion with breeding concentrated in very low numbers along the southern border in Ontario. The population is actually declining again in the southern part of the province but holding in the East.
