Ottawa- In flight this bird has a huge wingspan. This is the same bird as the other photo but taken later in the day so the plumage appears darker and browner.

Williamsburg - this individual has a very dark facial disk. The dark disk, dark around the eyes and overall darker brown plumage suggests the bird is partially melanistic. I rechecked other images and have reconsidered the bird's sex. It may have been a male after all.

Plaisance - This bird attracted attention because of the unusual amount of brown feathers around the eye. None of us has ever seen one like this before. I made the trip specifically to see it and we had some luck. I have friends who have many years experience with Great Greys and have handled both live birds and study skins. They had never come across this marking.

Far from a textbook photo - which is fine - I'm happy to have finally seen this Great Gray in our Christmas Bird Count circle at Dorval, Montreal.
