Williamsburg - this individual has a very dark facial disk. The dark disk, dark around the eyes and overall darker brown plumage suggests the bird is partially melanistic. I rechecked other images and have reconsidered the bird's sex. It may have been a male after all.

Plaisance - This bird attracted attention because of the unusual amount of brown feathers around the eye. None of us has ever seen one like this before. I made the trip specifically to see it and we had some luck. I have friends who have many years experience with Great Greys and have handled both live birds and study skins. They had never come across this marking.

Every bird photo contains a story behind it, along with a memory of the surroundings and environment. Each photo is different - one of the key reasons for taking more and more photos. Far from a textbook photo - which is fine - I'm happy to have finally seen this Great Gray in our Christmas Bird Count circle at Dorval, Montreal.
