In a scene that highlights the need for conservation and awareness, the Greater Flamingo flies against the backdrop of the towering metropolis of Dubai. The UAE government should be commended for preserving a vital estuary in the immediate vicinity of one of the world's fastest-growing cities. However the great species of the world are at an ever-increasing risk of disappearance as we push them to their limits.

After 30 years of birdwatching, my first sighting of a Black-backed Woodpecker. I thought it was a Hairy flying in, but the call was quite different. Seen at the Calvaire d'Oka provincial park.

One of my favourite photos of the trip happened in the Nanoli farms as we stopped to observe what seemed like a raptor landing in the trees. Sure enough, the hunter's golden eyes could be seen eyeing the next victim.

What appears to be a Black Redstart. This bird landed on the roof of Zurich Airport and may have been in migration as it seemed out of placed and tired. Fortunately had my camera handy!
