Brian Morin: As often happens with this species, the bird was very cooperative. I watched it while sitting on a rock at a distance of about 20 feet.

Ottawa - I don't need more Yellowlegs pictures but I couldn't pass up this setting and the light. There is very little crop on this picture. The bird was close.

Cornwall - Bird at nest site at dawn. It had been feeding its single 10-day old chick a cottontail rabbit. This must have been a very late nesting.

Brian Morin: I couldn't believe the effect on the eyes. The very early morning light gave them a unique glow. That is the actual colour – no retouching.

Chris: Fabulous colouring; I like the backlighting
BrianMorin: I was very surprised because I didn't think I had a good angle on the bird but it worked pretty well. It had the head feathers raised most of the time I watched it. Purples have recently moved back into Canada after a few months further south.

Brian Morin: One of my favourite boreal birds. We had to work hard to find this one whereas at this time of year individuals and family groups are usually easier to locate.

Limoges - A flock was coming to a feeder. The birds were very skittish despite me being covered in camo mesh. It took two hours before they dropped down and I wasn't too close.

BrianMorin: He was a real beauty and for a couple of seconds was in the right place at the right time. I made an observation about the difference between males and females in my last two occasions with these birds. It is the females that will come in first, not the males but both are nervous. Pine Grosbeaks, on the other hand, are very obliging and are not only less skittish, they will allow closer approach. Unfortunately I haven't come across them this winter.
