This was both a surprise and a shocker. I was trying to get some shots of a more distant Ring-necked Duck when I spotted this Bufflehead diving very close to shore and only about 5-7 metres from the car. The problem was that weed stalks were in the way, partially obscuring the shot so I waited until the bird would dive them backed up just enough to give me a chance. I was able to get it between the weeds with enough room to perform a decent crop. I also had it in perfect light and distance. As you know, without sun, this bird’s head is black.
