Cornwall - Bird at nest site at dawn. It had been feeding its single 10-day old chick a cottontail rabbit. This must have been a very late nesting.

  1. I couldn’t believe the effect on the eyes. The very early morning light gave them a unique glow. That is the actual colour – no retouching.

  2. I’m very pleased with my experience. This was once the local species of owl that could be found in many mature woodlots. Now they are much more difficult to locate. They have likely succumbed to competition from the Barred Owl which is now common. Oddly enough the Great Horned is a more powerful bird and could have a Barred for dinner but the Barred seems to be more persistent and the GHOWs often move on. They don’t seem to appreciate the competition.
