Hillman Marsh - Similar to Long-billed. Bill usually shorter and it begins to gently curve downward about one third of the way from the tip. In spring plumage there is spotting rather than barring on the breast near the bend in the wing which is found in Long-billed.
With dowitchers, no two birds are alike with markings.

Brian Morin: Dowitchers are among the most challenging birds to identify in spring. These are just as few of the helpful hints to consider to separate the species. Fall is a breeze.

Hillman Marsh - An annual spring migrant in very low numbers. This year there were about 20, an exceptional number. Long-bills arrive about 7-10 days before Short-bills making identification easier. Females of both species have longer bills. Bill fairly straight without noticeable droop.
