Help! After a long search through many images and discussions on the internet, I've come to the conclusion this is a Cooper's Hawk. However I've read lots of information that seems to contradict that conclusion. The main reason I think this is a Cooper's Hawk and not a Goshawk: the relatively thinner tail. The white superciliary line, heavy streaking down to the legs, large size seemed to indicate Goshawk at first, but when looking at the only Goshawk photo I've uploaded on Birdviewing, this bird seems different. There is a lot of variability in the images on the internet.

I'm fairly sure this is a Cooper's Hawk but please feel free to discuss all field marks. From the observations we made today, it was near Crow-sized (perhaps 1-2cm smaller), had fine streaking, and a fairly large head.

While parked at the Dorval weather station, to my huge surprise a Cooper's Hawk flew up from a ditch right beside my car. Fortunately I had the camera. The bird stayed for about a minute but was being dive-bombed by a Kestrel. It then flew over runway 24R and into the woods on the north side of the airport.

Cooper's Hawk seen on the Hudson CBC on December 29, 2007. The bird was eying a flock of Redpolls and later flew into the cedar bush to hide. It was one of two seen on the day.
