Ottawa - There is good news on the woodpecker front. All of the southern species in Ontario are showing an upward trend in their populations. This includes the Pileated which is experiencing record highs on Christmas counts in many areas. My take on this, and I was expecting it, is that it is related to the decimation of native ash trees due to the emerald ash borer. Almost 10% of the tree population in the southern part of the province is ash. The white ash will be almost wiped out in the next very few years as the onslaught continues. The species is virtually gone in the south.

South Lancaster - If you spend enough time outdoors shooting you will occasionally come across exciting subjects. This was one of those and being lucky enough to capture it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. The picture attracted significant attention on both the Weather Network and CBC radio. The Pileated, protecting its nest, had a brief altercation with the squirrel. Over in seconds, the squirrel and woodpecker parted with no further issue.

Ottawa - I watched a pair for about 20 minutes. They were very high and almost always in shadow or behind branches. The female briefly showed enough for a few shots including this one with a moth she dug out from behind some bark.

Russell - It seems like everyone is finding opportunities to capture these great birds. This one was digging at the bottom of a tree then went inside a large hole at the base and could be heard inside the rotted out shell. I was only feet away. It didn't care. Had to back up to get some of the shots. Way too close.

Rockport - Very unusual. This bird was feeding on withered wild grapes. It wolfed quite a few down and was only about 10 feet away. Amazing sight.

Cornwall – the nest was 40 ft up in a dead tree on a golf course. The young call as loud as an adult and do it frequently.
