Sarsfield (Ottawa) - Up to four birds were present for a few days – I saw two. They are rarely spotted in migration in the region.

Ottawa - This 'juvie' is putting its best foot forward as it probes for dinner. We are in that interim period in the annual cycle, the shorebird season, which bridges summer and fall. This is one of the most interesting and challenging periods of birding and is for me more fun and satisfying than dealing with those 'confusing fall warblers'. This is especially true for photographers because more often than not if you strategize you don't need to chase them, they will come to you.

Algonquin Park - Numerous Red Crossbills present but few White-winged this year. Normally we can expect pictures from ground level looking to tree tops but from the elevated visitor centre deck I was almost at the height of the trees.

Merlin - I spotted two pairs in this area. The males were singing. This Midwestern species irrupts into the region in small numbers to breed and it often occurs after our main songbird migration is over.
