Cornwall - This was a case of being in the right place at the right time. I was sitting in my car by the water and the kingfisher flew up to a rock for a perfect photo setting.

Details: female, adult

They have a nest nearby on a rock face. The female is noticeably larger than the male and this particular female is larger than others I've seen so she's at least 1/3 larger.

This was a late day surprise. I didn't see two birds picking up grit on the side of a dirt road until the last second because of the low light. I stopped only about a car length away from one as it worked its way back into the bush. I had no time to check camera settings and was worried about shooting too slow so I hoped for the best. I manged three shots of several in fairly good focus.

Brian Morin: Luck was on my side. If the bird had flown it would have been game over but it decided to walk away casually, giving me 3 seconds to grab shots before it was in the brush.

Ahmad Shah: Fabulous shot of one of my favorites.
Brian Morin: I know what you mean about being a favourite. This is what most non-birders think about when they think of sandpipers. I was lucky because a flock of 40 had arrived likely late morning and were working Beach 1. They were easier to work with than the few on Gull Island and clean sand offered an excellent setting.

Crysler - An uncommon to rare regional migrant. Likely a male based on the bill length. Females of both dowitcher species have longer bills.

Ingleside - This is the subspecies Greater Common Redpoll. The bird is a little larger, with heavier streaking on the underparts, browner above, more black in front of the eye and heavier bill. The bird breeds on Baffin Island and Greenland and appears in small numbers during major redpoll eruptions like the one we are enjoying this winter.
