Did I ever get lucky today. My first Red Kite sighting, and just about missed getting a photo. The bird is distinguished from the Black Kite by more rufous plumage and a deeply forked tail. Seen flying over Frankfurt Zepplinheim forest which has both an extensive tract of old forest and also open fields..

Sorry for the poor quality, but as I was biking through the regional park at Waldorf near Frankfurt I saw my first Sparrowhawk. Could not get any closer though. This is an accipiter, but not the same as the similar Sharp-shinned Hawk.

I don't think I've seen a Coot out of water - look at the size of those feet. It was standing on a partially-submerged park bench, as the Main River was overflowing in Frankfurt.
