Southern Africa is well represented as you might expect with members of the Heron and Egrets family (ardeidai). As vagrants we have even had Little Blue Heron and Snowy Egret. So to start a bird you all know well- Black-crowned Night Heron is common here in South Africa

You can find over 30 members of the Procellariidae
family -Petrel Shearwaters Prions and Fulmars in Southern African Waters. It makes for great pellagics off any our coastlines

The African finfoot is actually in its own family (heliornithidae) with just 2 other species

All three species are extremely shy. We find them on the highveld on quiet rivers with lots of overhanging vegetation often sharing the river with African Black Duck
