It certainly has been long time coming - nearly 30 years since my last Gyrfalcon sighting - and not for lack of trying. It was somewhat surreal having a couple of minutes to take these photos after so many failed attempts to locate one. Seen in the Pitt Meadows valley in good looking Gyrfalcon habitat.

Wolfe Island- Kingston - This bird had been reported off and on by one person for a few weeks but spotting it is luck. I went there hoping but not expecting to see it and got incredibly lucky. I watched it briefly and before it took off it raised its wings and let the wind keep them up so I had about 5 seconds to get shots like this. That is a long time from a photographer's perspective. As for it being a female, I was going by size. This was a big bird.

Kingston - Wolfe Island - We don't have a lot of Gyr photos so I thought I'd post another view.

Kingston - Wolfe Island; I waited a long time for this species. It does not show clearly but the cere on the bill is yellowish, rather than pale blue seen on young birds. However, it isn't very extensive so others are thinking this bird is a sub-adult but not a young bird.

I would have loved to get a sharper image, but the bird was well concealed on an overcast day.

Another rare bird alert and another lifer. At one point it was harassed and chased by a Peregrine, but returned to its perch.

hybrid, captive
Gyrfalcon X Peregrine Hybrid seen at Dorval beside the runway 24 left. This bird has a tracking device and is used by the falconer as a means of scaring away ducks and geese from the runways. The bird can soar up to and above the "ceiling" which is the base of the clouds, however with only a hand wave it will return. It was fed a bird upon return. There are also 2 hawks the falconer uses.
