White-breasted nuthatches love bird feeders. This one was hanging around the one at the Pinery visitor centre. Females have a greyer crown and less rufous on their belly.

Not very often you get to see Red-breasted Mergansers very close. But in Chicago harbour they were swimming around between the boats very close to shore! Probably there was plenty of little fish for them there!

Milton Lee Olive Park in Chicago is a good spot for migrants. Here is an early Phoebe that got me all excited since it was my first ever!

Drake male Wood Ducks are just stunning!! This one was swimming around a pond just outside Chicago Zoo.

After a night spent in the humid grass, as the sun comes up the birds like to sit on a post and get their feathers dry! Unfortunately this is strongly backlit, but the species is not so easy to get in front of the camera so well!!

If you want to find an Upland Sandpiper, just scout the posts... I wonder where they've been sitting before there were any!!

When you go to Carden Alvar you forget how rare Bobolinks actually are in the rest of the province! Carden Alvar is an amazing hotspot for open area species like them!

When they are screaming at you, red-winged blackbirds forget to be scared and just don't escape!! Easy then to get some shots of them!!
