This species is the most widespread Corvid in the Sahara desert. In good light, the brown neck is clearly visible.

This was an exciting find for me, even though supposedly common in the area. However, it was so close and did not feel disturbed by my presence or by the many other people walking by! He kept working its bark as if nothing were. I guess there was a lot of good stuff under it!!
