St. Rose - This is the Prairie subspecies which migrates south and returns in late February as our first spring bird. Note the white area over the eye. So what is it doing here now? It must have missed the bus :) Large flocks of Horned Larks appeared in the area today, fresh arrivals from the north since yesterday.

St. Rose - there was just enough sunlight to highlight the bird's beautiful eyes. As usual, the bird was on a pole, annoyingly oblivious to me in my van. She did occasionally look, just long enough to get the shots I was after. She didn't care about small vehicles but she took off when a noisy larger truck passed by.

St. Rose - small flocks of these birds moved in recently, about four dozen birds in total. Usually we have to struggle to find one in a flock of Snow Buntings. A couple of individuals were uncharacteristically cooperative, permitting close approach with the van.
