The Rain quail normally looks like a Common Quail. During the rainy (which is their breeding) season, they get these distinctive stripes and spend mornings and evenings standing on small rocks, calling to females.

The Amur Falcon is an amazing (crow-sized) bird that travels roughly 22,000 km every year. Starting from the Amur river basin area of Siberia, Mongolia and China, south across the Himalayas, to NE India. Then across the breadth of India, over the Indian Ocean to end at Southern Africa - the Kruger National Park - where they stay until the season changes. They then head back the on the same route. The link (below) shows the path taken by one female that was tagged in "Puching", Manipur, India.
This bird was photographed in Western India, where they pause briefly to eat and ready themselves for the ocean crossing

St. Rose - This male has been in the area for the winter but it was the first time I had a chance to see it up close.

Algonquin Park - It has been a good winter for Pine Grosbeaks with adult males part of many flocks. This large, attractive winter finch is not as aggressive as Evening Grosbeaks and will often hang back while the 'greedies' feed. I was very happy with recent shots in a tree but I was hoping for an opportunity to capture them on the snow to show off the colour. This setting was perfect and sitting in my car allowed close approach.

St. Andrews West - While it doesn't have bright colour like the male, it is still an attractive bird.

St. Andrews West - Finally, after several years without seeing an adult male and following three failed attempts at this location in the last week to see any grosbeaks I had success.

Kingston (Wolfe Island)- We were very surprised that the bird didn't take off as we drove by, especially being an adult female. The pink sky was an interesting background.

Constance Bay - A few Black-backs venture south of their boreal habitat in winter but they remain a rare visitor. They are usually found in forests with red or jack pine and work on dead or dying trees. I have seen a few and heard more over the years but never had a chance to get decent photos. This bird took hours to track down but in the end I got plenty of good shots. However, getting the forehead patch of the male to show was extremely challenging. If you don't see it, the bird looks like a female.

Montreal- After seeing Ahmad's nice photo, I had to give it a try, expecting that the bird could leave any day. I didn't need to look for the bird, just the birders/photographers. The setting is right beside the Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport and the bird spent about 25% of its time working the fence line, occasionally heading further onto airport property. The rest of the time it was high in trees across the road, feeding on berries. Possible female based on tail length.
