Here an adult of the European subspecies (or maybe a distinct species) of the Herring Gull (argentatus). It looks very much the same as the American Herring Gull!

female
This species is not very common in the south of Switzerland but it may occasionally be seen. This is probably a young female, since males have white eyes and adult females have lighter colored eyes. It joined a flock of Tufted Ducks (the one on the left).

This photo is a little blurry but it shows a very special encounter: away from any water a whole family of Virginia Rails (one adult and 4 chicks) crossed our road out of the blue! This was stayed behind nd wasn't sure whether to cross or not... it eventually did and joined all the others!

male, adult, summer plummage
After the 1964 earthquake moved the entire island up by five metres, exposing a large strip of land, the murre cliffs became several hundred metres from the ocean. The young birds--which fledge at a quarter of adult weight--then needed to run the gauntlet of glaucous-winged gulls to get to the sea. Here, a family group pauses at a pond on their way to the sea.

Cobourg - This is a winter like no other. A while ago I set a goal of hopefully seeing 100 Snowies this winter. I surpassed that target some time ago and have spotted 150 in Eastern Ontario alone with a few in other parts of the province like this bird. It would be possible to see 175 In Eastern Ontario but it would take some work and a lot more driving. There will be many fond memories.

I anticipated that we would start to see birds returning from the U.S. around mid-month. Last night in Cornwall I found an old adult male, no visible marks, atop a light (so I could clearly see it with binoculars even at 10 p.m.) This is a new bird locally. Keep your eyes open for more arrivals.

St. Isidore - I got lucky. About one bird in 40 is an older adult male. I waited for 75 minutes for this bird to do something besides sit atop an ugly power pole with its eyes closed. It began hunting and moved to a better perch, with its eyes open.

St. Rose - I am now concentrating on types of Snowy Owl shots that I don't have yet. I have seen about 55 different birds this winter and this ranks at the top of the list as the 'cleanest' adult male. Likely only about 2-3% of this year's migrants look like this.
