This species is very similar to the American Snowy Egret and differs only in the color of the bare parts (bill and legs), especially when breeding.

A nice Dunlin in breeding plumage. The nice thing in Iceland in summer is that there is light for 24 hours, even though in part of the "night" it gets a little darker. This picture was taken very late in the evening!

Dotterels breed in the tundra, and during their southward migration towards Northern Africa they usually stop in habitats that remind them of their breeding place. Therefore they are mostly found above the treeline in the Alps. In this particular region, no Dotterels had been seen for over 20 years, but I was lucky enough to "rediscover" them in a group of 5 adults!

A Mallard resting on the ice in a very cold winter day in Northern Germany. Ducks mate very early in the spring and that's why they put on their breeding plumage in the winter already. Come the summer, males will look as drab as females!

There is only one island with seabird cliffs in the North Sea, and it is Helgoland. It is also a very good spot for migrants in the fall! Here you can get pretty close to the Gannets breeding there, already quite busy at the end of March!

Quite a distant shot but it shows a beautiful Eared Grebe in breeding plumage. You can see why in Europe it is called Black-necked Grebe, too!

The colony of Yellow-legged Gulls on Tremiti islands is very numerous. When they first came to the island, seabirds such as shearwaters were breeding in crevices almost everywhere, but were completely replaced by the gulls, and were constrained to breed only in the vertical cliffs that the gulls don't like. Here is one recently fledged juvenile Yellow-legged Gull. A quite distinctive character for the species in this plumage is the black "mask" around the eye.

Nice having the chance to see these birds in their breeding habitat! Western Sandpipers were quite conspicuous and relatively tame!
