Large gull taxonomy is quite complex and new species come and go as genetic analyses are performed. In Europe, the Mediterranean form of the Herring Gull (ssp. michahellis) has been attributed species status quite recently, and it is now called (as you can see from the pic) Yellow-legged Gull.

This species is not very common in the south of Switzerland but it may occasionally be seen. This is probably a young female, since males have white eyes and adult females have lighter colored eyes. It joined a flock of Tufted Ducks (the one on the left).

I'm not quite sure that this bird was supposed to be there on migration! It was the only one we saw during one month stay, and it might just have lost its way!

After mid-August we started seeing migrant Red Phalaropes, which added up to the locally breeding Red-necked.

American Pipits were also quite numerous around the village of Wales, AK.

Nice having the chance to see these birds in their breeding habitat! Western Sandpipers were quite conspicuous and relatively tame!
