It was unusual to me to see a Blackbird (here the island ssp. cabrerae) eating a lizard. I guess that's especially because these lizards (Madeiran Wall Lizard, Lacerta madeirensis) are so common on the island!

Berthelot's Pipit is another endemic of the Atlantic Islands (Madeira and Canary Archipelago, plus some more islands in between). It is very common in all open areas.

Madeira and the Canary Islands are home to the wild form of our pet canaries, the Island Canary. They are very common and widespread throughout he islands, but their song is not as varied as the domesticated form!

The Coto Doñana is one of the most important wetlands of southern Europe. When we got there, though, the water was almost all gone! Summers are extremely hot in southern Spain and even in October the temperatures are above 30°C, so that by the end of the summer there is no more water in the reservoirs! But some birds still linger around, as did this Cattle Egret.

Some credits for one of the most common birds in the world! Actually, as common as it might be, it is apparently strongly declining over part of its range in Europe, and the reasons for the decline are not well known!

A common winter visitor to southwestern Ontario, Slate-colored Juncos are always moving around in big flocks, and it is not always easy to get one resting for so long as to take a good picture!

Linosa island hosts the second largest Cory's (ssp. Scopoli's) Shearwater colony in the Mediterranean, with around 10000 pairs. The picture is not so good but shows them during their rafting. Around sunset, the birds gather together just outside the colony an will wait there until the moon goes down. No shearwater attends their nests when the moon is still shining! This is done chiefly to avoid predation.

In the winter, Lake Ontario hosts lots of ducks, and especially around Toronto, there are always spots that free of ice. Long-tailed Ducks approach the shores very close then!
