Ottawa - The interesting thing about this bird is the noticeable eyering. Usually when present it is indistinct but this one stands out. Very good number of redpolls coming to feeders now.

Ingleside - This is the third bird I've found this winter (I forgot about the Quebec bird). Getting photos of this species is very tough because of the frequency of observation, their small size and their tendency to perch high in a tree. I heard today about one coming to a suet feeder not far from Algonquin Park. That would be the way to do it.

Ingleside - I thought this might put us in a more spring-like mood. This was one of a small flock of overwintering birds. A month from now I would consider them early migrants.

Cornwall - Redpolls have been along roadsides feeding in weeds since December but it was only recently that they headed to feeders when heavy snow arrived. Update:. Christmas bird counts in Eastern Ontario did well with redpolls. Several had record numbers with the highest being over 750. Some feeders in the region are now seeing 30-75 birds coming in regularly.

St. Rose - We have half a dozen birds about 40 minutes from me which is a smaller number than the last few years but appreciated nevertheless. This was a 'pole bird' that didn't mind our presence. As a rule I don't take many pole shots but the light was great and it was very cooperative. I shot from the window and moved on after a minute.
Update: Some owl stats. Christmas count data indicated that the flight this year was larger than I expected. Nearly 190 birds were counted in Ontario with about 40% in the east. Some stayed and others moved into the U.S. until spring.

Cornwall - Most siskins left the province last fall so a small flock at a local feeder was a pleasant surprise.

Ottawa - I don't take many pictures of Chickadees but when I spotted this guy I got a few shots off very quickly before it moved on. Leucism has altered not only the head colouring but the side feathers are paler and note the foot colour. It should be black.

Williamsburg - This is the northern subspecies, a few of which overwinter in the region. Spring migrants will arrive in a little over a month.
