I was hard-pressed to make an id with no experience with this species. After reviewing multiple accounts in both field guides and online, I concluded it was a juvenile American Golden Plover for the long primaries extending beyond the tail, the pale supercilium (not yellowish), the softly barred underparts (not streaked) and general size and bill size. Despite those field marks - would be happy to have the experts chime in please!

Oliphant - This is the first confirmed record of Reddish Egret in Canada. Not only that but it gets the 'ugly bird' award. :) This juvenile appeared on the Bruce Peninsula and has been present for weeks. It may well remain for weeks to come because it likes the neighbourhood on Lake Huron; shallow shore waters with good feeding opportunities. It is standing on a boat.

From the bird identification app I use, it seems that one of the identifying marks for a juvenile is the "scaling" that can be seen in the feathers.

This bird looks like a female but has the beginning of color change on the gorget so it must be a juvenile male.
