Marionville- This is the northern subspecies, one of our overwintering birds (yellow above the eyes). The migrant Prairie subspecies (white above the eyes) has arrived but I haven't seen one yet.

Winchester - this shows the feather detail well. It is quite an attractive bird that we seldom see closer than a hundred feet or more and usually not for very long.

Winchester - I have never been closer to these birds. A flock of 6 were busy foraging on corn stubble near a roadside. They weren't bothered by the car although some took note of the shutter clicks.
